Japan Sumo Association Youtube offers selected full matches on its Youtube and Website channel. They are usually Makuuchi (Top Division) bouts, but sometimes there are Juryo (2nd Division) bouts as well. There is no commentary.
Juryo (2nd Division)
Chiyosakae is on the left.
This was a very important day for both Rikishi. Gonoyama made his sekitori (salaried) debut at age 24 (to celebrate he changed his ring name from Nishikawa). He was a university star who was fast tracked into Sumo at Sandamne (Division 4--no salary) in March 2021. It has taken him 8 Basho to make his way through Sandamne and Makushita (Division 3--no salary). In those Basho he was 39-15-2 (absences). He has earned one lower division Yusho (championship).
All Juryo debuts are great achievements, but Gonoyama's pales in comparison to of that of Chiyosakae. At age 31 years and 11 months, he becomes the 4th oldest Rikishi to debut in Juryo in the Post World War II era. It has taken him 80 Basho, 530 matches (of which he has missed 10), and over 13 years to get there. He began at Jonokuchi (Division 6--no salary) at the age of 18. Sumo fans wish them both well, because at their rank, they will need a Kachi-koshi (winning record--at least 4-3) to keep their salary. This Sumo fans wishes Chyosakae only the best, as, after the last 13 years, it would be terrific to keep that salary for at least one more Basho.
5. Oshoma (J13e) (1-0) v Hokuseiho (0-1) (J13w) (Match Video) Oshoma is on the left.
This match featured two rising stars. Oshoma a 25 year old university star, was fast tracked into Sumo at Makushita (Division 3--no salary) and has a record of 21 and 7 and one Yusho in 4 Basho. He won the Makushita Yusho in May.
Hokuseiho, a protege of Miyagino Stable Coach Magaki (formerly 69th Yokozuna Hakuho), has returned to Juryo after an absence of 3 Basho (due to injury). He is 200 cm (6'7") and weighs 375 pounds. Although he is 20 years old with only 11 Basho under his belt, he has a record of 53-9-35, with Yusho in Divisions 6-3. His potential is perhaps unlimited, but this match shows he still has a way to go. However, he is definitely one to watch, in this Basho and the future.

B. Notable and Quotable
Note: Rikishi names that are not linked are those who are linked above in the videos.
Notable:
The July Basho picked up where the May Basho left off. The top of the Banzuke (rankings), Yokozuna, Ozeki, Sekiwake, and Komusubi, were 3-5, just as they were on the first day of the May competition. Terunofuji (Y1e) was beaten handily by Abi (demoted from Sekiwake to Komusubi after a losing record in May), and the Yokozuna appeared to land hard on his feet on the cement. He appeared to be limping after that. Two of the 3 Ozeki lost and the third (Mitakeumi) barely won. Wakatakakage's (S1e) Ozeki run began poorly as he was man handled by returning Ichinojo (M2w) (coming back after missing May with Covid). Wakatakakage needs to win a minimum of 12 to achieve Ozeki. Most troubling of all was Shodai (O2w). Already Kadoban (coming off a losing record--10 losses in May), he must win a minimum of 8 matches to retain his rank. He certainly didn't look Ozeki like today, pushed out within 4 seconds by Kotonowaka (M2e).
So we have a Yokozuna who's knees are problematic, and three rather unimpressive looking Ozeki. The man who could be the next Ozeki got off on the wrong foot. It does make for what looks like, on first view, another wide open Basho that could be won by anyone. So that part should be interesting as things heat up in July.
For the Day: (san'yaku)
Yokozuna: Terunofuji (Y1e)--0-1
Ozeki: 1-2: Takakeisho (O1e) (L) 0-1; Mitakeumi (O1w) (W) 1-0; Shodai (O2w) (L) 0-1
Sekiwake: 0-2: Wakatakakage (S1e) (L) 0-1; Daieisho (S1w) (L) 0-1
Komusubi: 2-0 ; Hoshoryu (K1e) (W) 1-0; Abi (K1w) (W) 1-0
Top Rankers finished 3-5 (.375); In May they were also 3-5.
Maegashira (Rank and File) were 4-2 (.667) against san'yaku today. In the Day standings Maegashira are 1-0 against the Top Rankers. In May they were also 4-2 in matches and 1-0 in the Day standings.
There were 7 Kimarite (finishing moves) used today. There were no throws. In May there were 6, including 1 swing.
In Juryo (2nd Division), there were 7 Kimarite used today, including 1 throw. In May: 8, no throws.
Average Fighting Time:
For the Basho: 12.1 seconds. In May: 9.9 seconds
Median Fighting Time: 6.1 Seconds. In May: 6.1 seconds
