B. Notable and Quotable

Notable

Injury news: Ishiura (M5w) has withdrawn from the Basho due to a neck injury received during his bout with Kotonowaka (M6w) today.

For the full story see the Nikkan Sports article. According to the article, as far as I can tell, the injury requires two weeks of rest and rehabilitation.

Ishiura will forfeit (fusen) his scheduled match against Endo (M4w) on Day 4 to make his record 1-3. Each Day he is absent after that will be added as an absence (1-3-1, etc.). He will finish 1-3-11. There will be a considerable drop in his rank.

It was a difficult day for several Rikishi today. Terunofuji (O1e) won, but just barely  It is becoming increasingly clear that his right foot is injured. Shodai (O1e) lost again, this time clearly giving up at the end. This may be due to residual effects of his recent bout with Covid. And it appeared that Terutsuyoshi (M11w), at the end of his 43 second marathon with Chiyotairyu (M12w), may have injured his arm with the throw that won the match. It will be interesting, and perhaps a bit depressing if these Rikishi can't make it through the Basho.

Takakeisho (O1w) lost again, this time to Horshoryu (K1w), the first Top Rank win for the Shin-Komusubi. Takakeisho is now 1-2, and needs 7 more wins to retain his Ozeki Rank. Shodai, now 0-3, needs to win 8 of his last 12 to retain his rank. The Shin-Ozeki, Mitakeumi (O2w) won convincingly over Daieisho (M1e), dismantling him in 2.5 seconds. The new Ozeki, who won the January Basho, is now 3-0 and joins 5 other undefeated Rikishi at the top of the table. The only other undefeated Top Ranker is Wakatakakage (S1e).

On the Day: Yokozuna 1-0, Ozeki 1-2, Sekiwake 2-0, and Komusubi 1-1. It was the first winning Day for Top Rankers in this Basho. Their overall record is 13-11. At this point in the January Basho their record was 14-7. (The ranks are the same, but the makeup is different).

Maegashira were 2-4 against Top Rankers today. Their record is now 8-10. In January it was 4-11 after 3 Days.

Rookie Kotokuzan (M16w) (1-2) lost a 10.5 second match to recently re-promoted Kagayaki (M17e) (2-1). Both of them require a winning record in order to stay in the Top Division.

There were nine Kimarite (finishing moves) used today, three of which were throws. 15 Kimarite have been used so far, including five different throws (63 bouts). In January, after three Days, 15 Kimarite were also used, including four throws and a swing down (60 bouts).

Average fighting time through 3 Days is 8.8 seconds. In January, at this juncture it was 8.4 seconds.

Quotable: (Source for all, unless otherwise specifically noted, is Chris Sumo Youtube).

"No special game plans for the Yokozuna. Just focusing on my own moves as normal."
Ura (M1w) on his razor thin defeat by Terunofuji.

"I think a bit of kindness slipped out at the end. I was easily winning and could have just come down on top of him. But chose to step forward."
Terunofuji's view of the bout.

"I think he's rather protecting that right leg. With his injuries he can't risk weighing it down."
Japan Sumo Association Chair Hakaku (who was the 61st Yokozuna under the name Hokutoumi), discussing Terunofuji's physical condition.
