B. Notable and Quotable

Note: Rikishi names that are not linked are those who are linked above in the videos.

Notable:

Injury news:

Terunofuji has dropped out of the Basho, due to lingering effects of a right heel injury he received in the January Basho, along with a flarup of his left knee. He was thrown out of the Dohyo by Tamawashi (M2w) today and landed heavily. It is unknown at this time whether the landing re-injured the knee or not. It was obvious throughout the first five days that he was not 100%, due to the heel injury. Rest and rehab time is estimated at one month, according to the Nikkan Sports article (Japanese).

The loss of the Yokozuna throws the Basho wide open. After today's action, there was only one Rikishi with a perfect record, Takayasu (M7e). Seven Rikishi are tied for second place at 4-1. Three of them: Mitakeumi (O2w), Wakatakakage (S1e), and Abi (S1w) are san'yaku (Top Rankers). The other Top Rankers are Takakeisho (O1w) 3-2, Hoshoryu (K1w) 2-3, and Shodai (O1e) & Takanosho (K1e) 1-4. Because there were two matches involving san'yaku against each other today, Maegashira had only 4 matches against them.

For the Day: Yokozuna 0-1; Ozeki (2-1,including Shodai's first win); Sekiwake 2-0; Komusubi 1-1. For the Basho they are now 22-18. After 5 Days in the January Basho san'yaku were 21-13-1. Maegashira split their four matches with san'yaku today, and their record is now 12-16. At this point in January they were 9-17.

Rookie Kotokuzan (M16w) lost to Tochinoshin (M15w), dropping his record to 2-3. Tochinoshin, a one time Ozeki is now 3-2. If either or both of them finish with a losing record, they will almost certainly be demoted to Juryo (2nd Division). That would be unfortunate for Kotokuzan, who has struggled for more than 12 years to reach the Top Division. But it might be disastrous for 34 year old Tochinoshin, who's last Juryo match was in September of 2014, and who has been in Professional Sumo since May 2006.

Today marked the first appearance of a Juryo Substitute, replacing injured Ishiura (M5w). Usually there is a rotation of Juryo substitutes, by Rank from among the top Ranked Juryo Rikishi. Oho (J1e) fought against Ichiamamoto (M17w) Today. Tomorrow, Tsurugisho (J1w) will fight against Kagayaki (M17e). These matches are very meaningful, as the high ranked Juryo see them as an opportunity to stake a claim in the Top Division for the next Basho, while the Top Division Rikishi are desparately trying not to be demoted to Juryo.

Today, Oho, (grandson of 48th Yokozuna Taiho, arguably the second best Rikishi of the modern era with 32 Top Division Yusho [Championships], 29 of which were earned as Yokozuna), won, to increase his Juryo record to 4-1, while Ichiamamoto fell to 1-4. Oho was a rookie in the January Tournament, but after starting out 7-3, one win away from promotion, he collapsed, losing his last 5 to finish 7-8. As he was M18e, he was demoted back to Juryo.

There were 9 Kimarite (winning moves) employed today, including one throw. For the Basho, through 5 Days, there have been 19, including 7 throws in 104 matches. Through 5 Days in the January Basho, there were 18, including 5 throws and a swing in 99. matches.

Average fighting time through 5 Days is 8.5 seconds. In January it was 9.5.

Quotable: (Source for all, unless otherwise specifically noted, is Chris Sumo Youtube).

"Today's my son's pre-school graduation, so that's a nice present for him.
Tamawashi (M22), on his win over the Yokozuna Terunofuji (Y1e)

"I was determined not to give him any openings. I stuck to what works for me" (Kyodo News)
Tamawashi, who has now earned consecutive Kinboshi (Gold Star Wins by a Maegashira over a Yokozuna).

"My Tachiai (Initial Charge) was good today. My bouts with Takarafuji tend to drag on (3 minutes, 5 seconds in November 2021; 1 minute 52 seconds in September 2020) so I went in hard for the quick win. I studied lots on TV while sitting out the last meet out, you see."
Takayasu (M7e), on his less than 10 second win over Takarafuji (M5e).
