Day 11--January 19, 2022

Recap and statistics

A. Video and Photos:

Note: NHK videos will be available on demand until 2 weeks after the end of the Basho (Tournament). After that, they will be removed from the site. They are usually available for on demand viewing about 1 day after the matches. Note that "highlights" means complete full match video of all daily Makuuchi matches.

NHK match highlights (condensed, all matches in their entirety, the highlights are 27 minutes long).

All NHK Video Highlights from one link (latest day should be uploaded by about 12:30 am Central Daylight Time the next day, i.e. Day 11 video should by available by 12:30 the next day. It might be available before that, so check).

Japan Sumo Association Youtube offers selected full matches on its Youtube and Website  channel. They are usually Makuuchi (Top Division) bouts, but sometimes there are Juryo (2nd Division) bouts as well. There is no commentary.

1. Terunofuji (Y1e) (9-1--10-1) v Chiyoshoma (M5w) (4-6--4-7) (Match Video
Terunofuji is on the left.

2. Shodai (O1w) (4-6--4-7) v Mitakeumi (S1e) (9-1--10-1) (Match Video
Shodai is on the right.

3. Wakatakakage (M1e) (4-6---5-6) Ura (M2e) (4-6--5-6) (Match Video)
Wakatakakage is on the left

4. Kotoyusho (J13e) (6-4--6-5) v Shimazuumi (Ms2w) (3-2--4-2) (Match Video)
Kotoyosho is on the left.
This was a Juryo (2nd Division) match which included a high ranking Makushita (3rd Division) participant. The significance is that Shimazuumi, with his now guaranteed Kachi-koshi (4 wins or more of the 7 he fights), has, from this rank, guaranteed himself a promotion to Juryo and the salary that goes with it, after toiling in the lower divisions for 10 years, from the time he began his career, at age 15. Kotoyusho needs 2 wins in his last 4 matches to avoid losing his salary.

Includes footage from selected matches in Divisions 1 (Makuuchi), 2 (Juryo), and 3 (Makushita--non salaried). Today Chris includes several Juryo contenders bouts.

2. Best lower division bouts Division 4 (Sandanme), 5 (Jonidan), and 6 (Jonokuchi)--all non salaried.

Photos:

Photo of the day: Terutsuyoshi (M11w) begins his Tachiai (initial charge) with a "playing with the cat" move (clapping his hands together in order to disorient his opponent. The time it bought him allowed him to get inside and, inside of 5 seconds, demolish Yutakayama (M13w) with a Makiotoshi (Twist Down).  It was one of only 2 Makiotoshi executed in all 6 Division Basho so far. Here is how it ended.

After playing "with the cat" the ending twist (Chris Sumo Youtube).

B. Notable and Quotable

Notable:
Injury news: Two Rikishi (wrestlers) dropped out of the Basho today due to injury. Shimanoumi (M9w) left due to a hamstring injury. Myogiryu (M10e) left due to a biceps injury. The rest of the Basho will feature 19 matches per day.

Both Terunofuji and Mitakeumi won their matches today, Terunofuji after a titanic struggle with Chiyoshoma. It lasted 42 seconds and was Teru's longest of the Basho. Mitakeumi won a decisive victory over listless Ozeki Shodai. Both leaders are 9-1. Abi (M6w)  also won today to move to 8-2, one behind the leaders. Three Rikishi (wrestlers) have 8 wins.

Mitakeumi has now achieved double digit wins as a Top Ranker in two consecutive Basho, something he has never achieved before. Two more wins should lock down Ozeki promotion, but a Yusho (Championship) would be a great way to enter the Rank. Teru will no doubt have something to say about that, perhaps on Day 15, if both leaders win out.

Congratulations to Kotonowaka (M14e) and Kotoeko on reaching Kachi-koshi today (8 wins and promotion). Kotoeko is coming off a 5-10 Basho in November and saved his Top Division status.

Commiserations to Daieisho (K1w), who lost his 8th match today, along with his Top Rank in the Top Division status. The Komusubi, who won the January 2021 Basho. Since then he has gone 40-46 and will now go back down to Maegashira (Rank and File), the second time this has happened since March of 2021.

Today's matches were completed in 3 minutes 48.1 seconds of fighting time, making the total for the first 11 days (217 matches) 37 minutes 36.7 seconds. At the same juncture in the November Basho (Tournament) the time was 45 minutes 47.8 seconds, in 219 matches.

There were 9 Kimarite (finishing moves) used today,  for a total of 25 winning Kimarite in the first 11 days.  In November the number of Kimarite after 11 days was 28. Of the first 217 matches 110 have been won by the two dominant Kimarite (Yorikiri--Frontal Force Out, and Oshidashi--Frontal Push Out). 93 were used in the 1st 219 matches in November. 28 throws, sweeps, and swings have been used so far in this Basho. 26 were won by throws, sweeps, and swings in 219 matches in November.

Top Rankers were 2-4 today, slightly lowering their overall record to 38-32-7. In the last 3 days they were 8-10-3. In November they were 50-27 after 11 days. The composition of the Top Rank (1 Yokozuna, 1 Ozeki, 2 Sekiwake, and 2 Komusubi) is now 6. In November it was 7.

Rank and Filers (Maegashira) again had a great day--3-1 against san'yaku today.  Their overall record is now 22-28 against their betters. In November it was 15-38 after 11 days.

The two Rookies split their matches today, making them 13-9 overall.  One of the wins was a forfeit.

Today's Juryo Substitute, Kotokuzan  (J4w) defeated Oho (M18e). The Juryo men are now 4-3 v the Top Division.

Quotable (all, except where specifically noted, are from Chris Sumo Youtube).

"I'm happy, as that was one of my goals for this tournament. I didn't think I'd get to 10 so quickly. Although I lost yesterday, I was able to get back on the right track and win convincingly today. I wanted to go in focused. But I was quite nervous."
Mitakeumi (S1e), reflecting on his Basho, and his match today. (Kyodo News)

"I got drawn into the belt battle, but just kept driving myself forward. And that was the result."
Mitakeumi, reflecting on today's match."

"I just reacted naturally. I wanted to attack and it paid off at the very end." But let's not talk about Titles now.
Abi (M6w) on his win over Ichinojo (M2w).

"From start to finish, I made the running. I may have 8 wins, but this meet is far from over, and I want to be even tougher mentally, in the days ahead."
Kotonowaka (M14e) (7-3--8-3) on his dominant win over Takarafuji (M7w) (8-2--8-3)

All coverage is in Japanese and can be accessed from the Nikkan Sports News Page. It can be easily (if not well) translated by Google Translate, which can be easily attached to your browser for seamless "translation." It is the next best thing to being able to read Japanese.
