Quotable (all, except where specifically noted, are from Chris Sumo Youtube).
"Would spectators raising their voices please refrain from doing so!"
Public address announcement after a couple of fans got a little too boisterous. All Basho since the beginning of the Pandemic have had rules about noise as a possible vector. They have asked fans to yell and cheer with their hands only. Note the response to the announcement in the Chris Sumo video.
"It felt long. Normally when I'm winning, 15 days seem to fly by but...this tournament felt so long that I wondered if I'd hold up mentally." In addition to winning the Yusho as a Sekiwaki for the third time, a feat never before achieved, Mitakeumi received a Gino-sho--Technique Prize.
Mitakeumi, Yusho, January 2022 Hatsu Basho
"My focus was on executing my style of sumo today I wanted to go forward and give my best. It's been a long time, and it's great to hear the response from the crowd. This tournament seemed particularly long. My goal was to win 10 bouts for the second straight tourney. All in all, it was really fun." (Kyodo News)
Mitakeumi
"Delighted (to receive a Shukun-sho--Outstanding Performance Prize). I feel I showed you the real me."
Abi,after his win over Kotonwaka that kept him in the Yusho race at the time.
"This tournament I was able to do all the things I'm capable of." (Kyodo News)
Abi
"It's tough to fall at the final hurdle, but I will use this feeling as a springboard to try and win more."
Kotonowaka who won a Kanto-Sho--Fighting Spirit Prize, some consolation for his being knocked out of the Yusho race with this loss.
"I needed to do a better job of going forward."
Kotonowaka (Kyodo News)
