B. Notable and Quotable
Notable:
Terunofuji (Y1e) easily won his 3rd consecutive bout, increasing his winning streak to 21. Known for his power, he has now won 3 matches with 3 different Kimarite. After winning his first Basho (Tournament) (13-2) as Yokozuna in September with 5 different Kimarite, he was a perfect 15-0 in November, using 10. It was by far the highest number of Kimarite as a percent of total wins in the Basho, and just 1 less than recently retired Hakuho used in his perfect 15-0 performance in his final Basho in July.
Teru is joined by 5 other undefeated Rikishi at the top of the table. None of them is an Ozeki. Takakeisho (O1e) and Shodai (O1w) both lost today. Mitakeumi (S1e) won his 3rd straight match and now needs 10 more wins for Ozeki promotion. The other perfect records belong to Onosho (M5e) , coming off a 5-10 record at M2e in November, Abi (M6e), Myogiryu (M10e), coming off a 2-13 record at M3w in November, and surprising rookie Oho (M18e). Onosho and Myogiru are examples of what can happen to Rikishi who are promoted to high rank Maegashira. They immediately run into the buzz saw of facing all the san'yaku (Top Rankers) in the first week of the Basho. Which often leads to a disastrous overall performance, dropping them to a rank where they can be more competitive. This yo yo-ing graphically demonstrates how difficult it is to climb the ranks into the elite classifications.
Based on multiple sources, this Basho could be getting smaller soon. Ura fought and won today in spite of being concussed yesterday. He said (see quotes below) he doesn't remember how he won today or what happened yesterday. While the medical protocols of the sport have improved since the death of Hibikiryu (London Guardian) after landing on his head in the March 2021 Basho, this doesn't seem to have effected any change with regard to concussion protocols. We wish the best for Ura, but worry about the long term effects of his injury.
In addition, Takakeisho (O1e) appeared totally winded after his first match with Ura and was still huffing and puffing when the 2nd match began, Meisei (K1e) appears to be suffering from some sort of lower back injury, Tochinoshin (M15w) has been hampered by a chronic knee injury, and Okinoumi (M4e) seems to be suffering from a knee or lower body injury.
Today's matches were completed in 3 minutes 17.4 seconds of fighting time, making the total for the first three days (60 matches) 8 minutes 24.1 seconds. At the same juncture in the November Basho (Tournament) the time was 13 minutes 18.7 seconds in 59 matches.
There were 8 Kimarite (finishing moves) used today, for a total of 18 15 (corrected January 12) in the first three days. In November the number after three days was 18. Of the first 60 matches 31 have been won by the two dominant Kimarite (Yorikiri--Frontal Force Out, and Oshidashi--Frontal Push Out). 28 of the first 59 matches in November were won by those Kimarite. 6 throws and swings have been used so far in this Basho. 7 were won by throws and scoops in November.
Top Rankers were 5-2 today to increase their overall record to 14-7. In November they were also 14-7 after three days. The composition of the Top Rank (1 Yokozuna, 2 Ozeki, Sekiwake, and Komusubi) has not changed.
Rank and Filers (Maegashira) had another rough day at the office. losing 4 of their five bouts against san'yaku (Top Rank). Their overall record is now 4-11 against their betters. In November it was also 4-11 after three days.
The two Rookies won their matches today, making them 5-1 overall.

H. Articles:
Kyodo News
Nikkansports.com carries the most exhaustive coverage of Sumo that I have seen. It publishes multiple daily articles about the Basho.
All coverage is in Japanese and can be accessed from the Nikkan Sports News Page. It can be easily (if not well) translated by Google Translate, which can be easily attached to your browser for seamless "translation." It is the next best thing to being able to read Japanese.
