Recap and statistics
A. Video and Photo
Note: NHK videos will be available on demand until 2 weeks after the end of the Basho (Tournament). After that, they will be removed from the site. They are usually available for on demand viewing about 1 day after the matches. Note that "highlights" means complete full match video of all daily Makuuchi matches.
NHK match highlights (condensed, all matches in their entirety, the highlights are 27 minutes long).
All NHK Video Highlights from one link (latest day should be uploaded by about 12:30 am Central Daylight Time the next day, i.e. Day 1 video should by available by 12:30 the next day. It might be available before that, so check).
----
Japan Sumo Association Youtube offers selected full matches on its Youtube and Website channel. They are usually Makuuchi (Top Division) bouts, but sometimes there are Juryo (2nd Division) bouts as well. There is no commentary.
----
Chris Sumo Youtube. Chris Gould is a long time free lance Sumo journalist and videographer. His videos are shot at the venue. Day 1: Terunofuji in trouble?
"What was it like to witness this day of sumo surprises? Here's my take on key bouts and issues from inside (and around) the arena, plus the latest observations on Terunofuji."
Shodai (O1w) (0-1) v Kiribayama (M2e) (1-0) (Direct link to Match Video)
Meisei (M13w) (1-0) v Oho (M14e) (0-1) (Direct link to Match Video)
Meisei, coming off a back injury plagued disastrous March Basho, in which he finished 1-14 and dropped 10 ranks, left Oho (returning from a one Basho stay in Juryo) beaten, battered, and bloodied. Meisei showed that when healthy, he is far better than his present Maegashira ranking (for one day, at least).
Match of Interest: Juryo (Division 2)
Enho (J7e) (1-0) v Yago (J7w) (0-1) Enho (168 cm--5'6", 100 kg--220 pounds) more than holds his own against Yago (188 cm--6'2", 177 kg--390 pounds) (Direct link to Match Video)

B. Notable and Quotable
Note: Rikishi names that are not linked are those who are linked above in the videos.
Notable:
Terunofuji (Y1e) suffered his first consecutive losses as Yokozuna, when he was dominated by Daieisho (K1w) in a match that lasted 3.9 seconds. The Yokozuna may still be suffering from the effects of the heel and knee injuries that forced him out of the March Basho after 6 matches.
Wakatakakage (S1e) opened with a win over Hokutofuji (M3e). After his 12 wins and Yusho (Championship) in March, he needs 21 wins in this and the July Basho for a probable promotion to Ozeki. According to Chris Sumo, no Rikishi from Fukushima has achieved Ozeki rank since Wakashima in 1881.
Only one of the three Ozeki won today. Mitakeumi (O1e) defeated Takayasu (M1e), but Shodai (O1w) and Takakeisho (O2e) both looked rusty in their opening losses.
Two Rikishi improved on poor career records today. Kiribayama won for the 2nd time in 9 tries against Shodai and Mitakeumi won for only the 8th time in 28 tries against Takayasu.
For the Day: (san'yaku)
Yokozuna: Terunofuji (Y1e)--0-1
Ozeki: 1-2: Mitakeumi (O1e) (W) 1-0; Shodai (O1w) (L) 0-1; Takakeisho (O2w) (L) 0-1
Sekiwake: 1-1: Wakatakakage (S1e) (W) 1-0, Abi (S1w) (L) 0-1
Komusubi: 1-1 Daieisho (K1e) (W) 1-0; Hoshoryu (K1w) (L) 0-1
Top Rankers finished 3-5 (.375); In March they were 4-4 (.500)
Maegashira (Rank and File) were 4-2 (.667) against san'yaku today. In the Day standings Maegashira are 1-0 against the Top Rankers. In March they were 3-3 in matches and 0-0-1 in the Day standings. (.500).
There were 6 Kimarite (finishing moves) used today, including 1 swing. In March there were 10, including 3 types of throws.
In Juryo (2nd Division), there were 8 Kimarite (finishing moves) used today, no throws. In March: 8, with 1 swing and 1 type of throw.
Average Fighting Time:
For the Basho: 9.9 seconds. In March: 6.8 seconds
Median Fighting Time: 6.1 seconds

Quotable: (Source for all, unless specifically stated, is Chris Sumo Youtube)
"Rusty after time away, that's how I describe his charge (tachiai--initial charge). It's a little too high and invites pushing attack. If you don't lean in, you don't get the belt."
Japan Sumo Association Chair Hakkaku (formerly 61st Yokozuna Hokutoumi), analyzing what went wrong for Terunofuji today.
"I needed to go forward and do my style of sumo. I've been working on my thrusting attack and pushing attack and improved my skills."
Daieisho (M1w) on his Opening Day win over Terunofuji (Kyodo News).
"I was slow starting, but made power tell."
Mitakeumi (O1e), with a succinct deconstruction of his win over March Playoff loser Takayasu (M1e). Takayasu had a 20-8 career record against the Ozeki going into this match.
"I just wanted to go forward, and gave everything I had. I still have a long way to go."
Kiribayama (M2e) on his effort in his win over Shodai (O1w) (Kyodo News)
"I just wanted to keep constant pressure on the ozeki with my pushing attack going forward. But I still need to keep improving,"
Kotonowaka (M2w) on his first career win over Takakeisho (O2w). (Kyodo News)
"Hit hard at the tachiai (initial charge) and attack from below. There's no big change in the way I feel. I have prepared as normal despite the hype."
Wakatakakage (S1e), on his hard fought win over Hokutofuji (M3e)
"I stuck to him as planned, but being wary of a pivot throw, could not charge forward as usual."
Hokutofuji
"Hit hard and thrust away was my plan, but once he got moving I was playing catch up. I need to keep him in front of me.
Oho (M14e), on his defeat at the hands of Meisei (M13w).
"My attack and finishers are still not going to plan. I've trained as I should but have to close out better"
Enho (J7e) on his victory over an Yago (J7w)
