B: Notable and Quotable:
Notable:
The last undefeated Rikishi fell today. Aoiyama (M11e) was beaten by Sadanoumi (M12w), to tie the two for first place at 6-1. Seven Rikishi are one match off the pace, including Terunofuji (Y1e), Hoshoryu (K1e), and Daieisho (K1w). 12 are two wins off the pace, including Takakeisho (O2w) and Abi (S1w). The March Champion Wakatakakage (S1e) is 3-4, as is Mitakeumi (O1e). Shodai (O1w), after yet another loss today, is 1-6, and needs 7 wins in his last 8 matches to avoid yet another Kadoban (losing record for an Ozeki, another losing record in July would cause demotion from Ozeki). If that happened, it would be Shodai's 4th Kadoban in 10 Basho as Ozeki.
Of the 21 Rikishi with 4 or more wins (within reasonable contention), 16 are Maegashira (Rank and Filers). For those who think the glass is half full, this means a suspenseful and entertaining 2nd week coming up, where almost half the contestants have a reasonable chance at winning the Yusho (Championship). For those who think otherwise, this is a perfect example of how weak the top end of this Banzuke (Ranking) is in this admittedly transitional period. Either way, the 2nd half of the Basho should provide some answers.
For the Day: (san'yaku)
Yokozuna: Terunofuji (Y1e)--(W) (5-2)
Ozeki: 8-13: Mitakeumi (O1e) (L) (3-4); Shodai (O1w) (L) (1-6); Takakeisho (O2w) (W) (4-3)
Sekiwake: 7-7: Wakatakakage (S1e) (L) (3-4), Abi (S1w) (L) (4-3)
Komusubi: 10-4 Hoshoryu (K1e) (W) (5-2); Daieisho (K1w) (W) (5-2)
Top Rankers finished 4-4 (.500) Today; In March they were 6-1 (.857).
Top Rankers are 30-26 (.542) through Day 7. In March they were 32-23 (.582).
Maegashira (Rank and File) were 2-2 (.500) against san'yaku today. In the Day standings Maegashira are 1-2-4 (.333--not counting ties)--against the Top Rankers. In March they were 0-4 in matches and 0-3-4 in the Day standings. (.000--not counting the tie). For the Basho they are 15-19 (.441). In March they were 14-22 (.389). One of the wins was a fusen (forfeit).
There were 8 Kimarite (finishing moves) used today, including 3 types of throws. In March there were 11, including 2 types of throws.
In Juryo (2nd Division), there were 10 Kimarite used today, including 2 types of throws. In March: 11, with 3 types of throws.

Quotable:
"My initial charge just didn't come together. I need to get that tachiai (initial charge) rhythm back, and quickly."
Terunofuji (Y1e) on his win over Endo (M4e).
=======================
"I watched Mitakeumi's move and did not want to make the mistake of being too hasty with my attack."
Daieisho (K1w) on his win over Mitakeumi (O1e) (Kyodo News)
=======================
"The thing is I'm not even injured. I'm just not creating winning chances, and my movement just seem's way off. And mentally I'm not exactly relaxed either."
Shodai (O1w) on his Basho woes, coumpounded by his loss today to Hokutofuji (M3e).
=======================
=======================
"I wanted to avoid Abi's strong initial charge."
"Yesterday he (Uncle Asashoryu, 68th Yokozuna) gave me some good advice: 'Stay low, go forward, be confident.'"
Hoshoryu (K1e), on two aspects of his win over Abi (S1w).
=======================
=======================
"My feeling was that the throw had worked, (or) a rematch at the very least. Again though, it's a risky stance which I shouldn't be in. But good Lord I wanted that win. And if I was stronger things would have never gotten to that stage."
Kotoshoho (M9e) on his epic 39.6 second win over Wakahotomaru (M6w), with a pinch of analysis spiced with a dollop of self criticism. He gained the win when a mono-ii (Judges conference) reversed the original gyogi (referee's).
"It was my favorite stance and I just had to go for it. He stays in because he's supple up top and weighty down low. And my drive lacks power."
Wakamotoharu's take on his throw which was milliseconds too late.
