Day 12 Schedule (Sumo Reference)

Day 11 Recap and statistics

Video: Note: NHK videos will be available on demand until 2 weeks after the end of the Basho (Tournament). After that, they will be removed from the site. They are usually available for on demand viewing about 1 day after the matches. Note that "highlights" means complete full match video of all daily Makuuchi matches.

NHK match highlights (condensed, all matches in their entirety, the highlights are 27 minutes long).

JSA Youtube offers selected full matches on its Youtube and Website  channel. They are usually Makuuchi (Top Division) bouts, but sometimes there are Juryo (2nd Division) bouts as well.

1. (Makuuchi) Terunofuji (Y1e) (left) v Ichinojo (K1e)(right) (Match Video)

2. (Makuuchi) Takakeisho (O1w) (Black belt) v Endo (M4w) (Purple belt)  (Match Video)

3. (Makuuchi) Ura (M7e) (Salmon belt) v Abi (M15w) (Black belt) (Match Video)

4. (Juryo) Tsurugishu (J1e) (Brown belt) v Midorifuji (J8e) (Black Belt) (Match Video)

Midorifuji, as many "small" Rikishi (Wrestlers), is a man of many Kimarite (finishing moves). Today he decided to engage in a belt battle with Tsurugishu (184 cm--6'0", 200 kg--440 pounds). Midorifuji is 171 cm--5'7", 112 kg--246 pounds. An audacious move by Midorifuji. Could he make it work?

Notable:

Terunofuji (Y1e) had a career record of 11-2 against Ichinojo (K1e) going into today's match. In some of the matches, the superiority was palpable, to the point that some might have said that Ichinojo gave up before the match even started. These are huge Rikishi (see above videos), who shake the earth when they move. Today Ichinojo gave Terunofuji all he could handle and then some. They battled for almost 38 seconds before Terunofuji was able to finally cash in on the belt grip he had attained early on. The win kept Terunofuji, now 11-0, at the top of the table, .

Takakeisho (O1w) rebounded from his upset loss yesterday by showing some of the best pushing-thrusting you will see. He was relentless as he drove Endo (M4w) out of the dohyo (ring), to run his record to 10-1.

Abi (M15w) kept up the pace (10-1) by beating Ura (M7e) (8-3). One of the keys to beating Ura, who earlier won three consecutive matches with Katasukashi (Under Shoulder Swing Down), two matches with Ashitori (Leg Pick), and one via Tottari (Arm Bar Throw), is to keep him from coming in low at the Tachiai (initial charge) and establishing himself on his opponents' limbs to set up these marvelous moves. This Abi did to perfection, blocking everything Ura tried to do with his long arms, and, with little trouble, thrusting Ura out. Abi, who has worked his way back from suspension and made it back to Top Division on the back of a Juryo Yusho in September, looks like he will shortly be back in the san'yaku (Top Rankers) rank. One never knows, but if he keeps this up, he will have a couple of matches with Top Rankers at the end of the week.

Today there were 9 Kimarite (winning moves) used. For the Basho there have been 28. After 11 Days in September there were 20.

The first 11 Days have consumed 45 minutes 47.8 seconds (219 matches at an average 12.6 seconds of fighting time. Afte 11 Days in September, there were 44 minutes, 31.8 seconds (210 matches at an average 12.7 seconds) of fighting time.

Once again, Maegashira (Rank and Filers) came up short against san'yaku. As the Top Rankers are fighting each other this week, there were only 3 matchups today. San'yaku won them all. They have now won the Day 10 times in 11 tries. Maegashira cumulative record is 15-38 (.283). In September Maegashira were 5-6 with a cumulative record of 19-35 (.352).

Nikkansports.com carries the most exhaustive coverage of Sumo that I have seen. It publishes multiple daily articles about the Basho.

All coverage is in Japanese and can be accessed from the Nikkan Sports News Page. It can be easily (if not well) translated by Google Translate, which can be easily attached to your browser for seamless "translation." It is the next best thing to being able to read Japanese.
