Notable:
Terunofuji (Y1e), 13-0 continued on his seemingly inexorable march to a Yusho (Championship), easily defeating Mitakeumi (S1e) in less than 4 seconds, his shortest match so far. Abi (M15w) 12-1, made a statement with his manhandling of Takakeisho (O1w), 11-2. With the win, Abi earned a match with the Yokozuna tomorrow. In most cases Maegashira (Rank and Filers) of that rank would not earn a direct shot at a Yokozuna. The Yokozuna would fight his last two matches against the Ozeki. But in this case, the realization by almost everyone that Abi is an M15 in name only made the logic of this matchup too good to exclude based on Rank. In essence, Terunofuji can clinch his 2nd consecutive Yusho with a win over Abi. But if Abi wins and Takakeisho beats Shodai (O1e), 9-4, it would open the possibility of a single or 3 way playoff. But with the top 2 having their fate in their own hands, fans couldn't be happier.
29 of the 40 Rikishi are either Kachi-koshi (winning score) or Make-koshi (losing score) after today's action, when 3 joined the ranks of Kachi-koshi and 7 joined the ranks of Make-Koshi. Today's action considerably whittled down the number that might be fighting "Darwin" matches on Day 15 (where either one or both Rikishi are 7-7).
Today there were 8 Kimarite (finishing moves) used. Through 13 Days there have been 29 used. In September there were 22 used at this juncture.
Total fighting time through 13 matches is 53 minutes, 55.6 seconds (259 matches at an average of 12.5 seconds). At the same juncture in September the numbers were 51 minutes, 48.8 seconds (246 matches at an average of 12.6 seconds).
For only the 2nd Day Maegashira won the Day over san'yaku (Top Rankers). They won 3 of 5 today. For the Basho their cumulative record is now 19-42 (.311). At this juncture in the September Basho they were 6-6-1 and 23-38 (.377).
Quotable (Chris Sumo Youtube)
"My God he's strong. He's on a different level. Everyone was backing him before hand."
Chiyonoumi (Ms33e) 6-1, on his loss in the Makushita (Division 3) Final against Ryuden (Ms47w), 7-0. Thus Ryuden begins the long trek back to Top Division after suspension for conduct unbecoming a Rikishi dropped him. One more Yusho in Makushita (especially if it is another undefeated Yusho, will probably promote him back to Juryo (Division 2-salaried).
"I want to kick on from here. But I don't want to set firm goals just yet, as injuries can happen."
Kinbozan (Sd100TD), 7-0, on his victory in the Final of Sandamne (Division 4) over Arauma (Sd42e), 6-1. Kinbozan, a native of Khazakstan and a Nihon University (Japan Times--note, this article may require fee based subscription--article detailing the rise of University stars in Professional Sumo), will now most likely be advanced to Division 3 (Makushita) after his first Professional Basho.
"Let's not dwell on defeat, as I still have two more to go."
Takakeisho (O1w), 11-2 on his defeat at the hands of Abi (M15w), 12-1.
"He's the better fighter, but my focus was just spot on today, and I connected so well."
Abi.
