2. Takakeisho (O1w) v Meisei (S1w) (Takakeisho is on the right)

Notable:

Terunofuji (Y1w) returned to his winning ways, defeating Ura (M6e), but it was anything but easy. The match took over 1 and 1/2 minutes and Ura threw everything but the kitchen sink at the implacable Yokozuna. None of it worked. Terunofuji thus held on to his one match lead over Myogiryu (M10w) and Onosho (M6w). He has a two match lead over 5 Rikishi.

Both Ozeki won their matches, moving Shodai (O1e) to 7-3 and Takakeisho (O1w) to 6-4. For Takakeisho, who opened with 3 losses and must win 8 to maintain Ozeki rank, it has been a sterling comeback.

Onosho and Myugiryo's wins earned them Kachi-koshi (guaranteed winning record) today. No one joined the Make-koshi (guaranteed losing record) list today.

Top rankers (san'yaku) were 6-1 today (including a forfeit win for Takayasu (K1e), inching their overall record near .600 (.586) (41-29-30). Maegashira (rank and file) had a bad day at the office against san'yaku, being shut out 5-0. Their overall record against their betters is now 19-31, dipping them back below the .400 mark (.380).

Quotable (Source: Chris Sumo Youtube, Compilation from various sources at Sumo Forum)

1. When the crowd's collective sigh went up, I got so down, because I still thought I could make something work. But looking back now, I feel happy that they sighed because it shows how many people were rooting for me.I also felt the Yokozuna saw me as a worthy opponent. I tried all kinds of things on him but nothing worked.

2. I knew he'd throw various things at me and just watched them all carefully. And in the end I felt I won with strength to spare.

Two views on the fascinating matchup of two "survivors", both of whom fell far down the Banzuke (Rankings) and had to work their way back. The first is by Ura (M6e), the second by Terunofuji (Y1w). The match was a fascinating one and a half minutes of the ultimate in finesse going up against the ultimate in power. Power won today.

Note: "Gambarize" means "do my best."

Nikkansports.com carries the most exhaustive coverage of Sumo that I have seen. It publishes multiple daily articles about the Basho.

All coverage is in Japanese and can be accessed from the Nikkansports Sumo Wrestling News Page. It can be easily (if not well) translated by Google Translate, which can be easily attached to your browser for seamless "translation." It is the next best thing to being able to read Japanese.
