Notable:
Meisei (S1w), desperate to avoid Make-Koshi and demotion to Komusubi, dominated Terunofuji (Y1w), sending him out of the dohyo (ring) within 6 seconds. The win advanced Meisei to 5-7, still needing 3 wins for a Kachi-koshi (winning record and promotion or keeping san'yaku [Top Rank]). He dominated the tachiai (initial charge) and the Yokozuna never recovered.
The loss didn't effect the standings as two of Terunofuji's closest pursuers (Myogiryu [M10w] and Onosho [M6w]) lost. Okinoumi (M8e) and Endo (M11e) both won to create a pack of 4 Rikishi that are one match behind the leader. 4 other Rikishi (including both Ozeki), are two matches in arrears with 8-4 records.
Takakeisho completed an unlikely but brilliant comeback from an 0-3 start to win for the 8th time against 4 losses. It was the first time in the "Kadoban" era (1969-) that a Kadoban Ozeki has lost his first 3 matches and recovered to avoid consecutive Make-koshi to save his rank.
In spite of that, both Ozeki are pretty much under performing, as are all of the san'yaku (Top Rankers) except the Yokozuna. Here are their records after 12 matches:
Shodai (O1e) 8-4
Takakeisho (O1w) 8-4
Mitakeumi (S1e) 8-4
Ichinojo (K1w) 6-6
Meisei (S1w) 5-7
Takayasu (K1e) 4-8-3 (he has dropped out due to injury--see below).
Without the Yokozuna the Top Rank has a record of 39-33-33, a winning percentage of .542.
Overall (with the Yokozuna) san'yaku have a record of 49-35-33, a winning percentage of .583.
Today's only Kachi-koshi (8-4) was Takakeisho.
Today's Make-koshi (4-8) were Takayasu, Ura (M6e), Ichiyamamoto (M15e), Kaisei (M14e), and Chiyonoo (M15w). Ichiyamamoto and Chiyonoo are almost certain to be demoted to Juryo, while Kaisei's standing will depend on how he does in his last 3 matches.
Maegashira were 2-1 (including a forfeit win) against san'yaku today, bringing their overall record against their betters to 21-36 (.368).
Takayasu dropped out of the Basho today as result of the gluteus muscle injury he sustained when pushed out of the dohyo by Terunofuji yesterday. He will suffer a Make-koshi and be back among the Rank and Filers in the November Basho.
Daiamami's (J2e) victory over Chiyonoo (M15w) not only improved the Juryo substitutes record to 5-4, but pretty much sealed Chiyonoo's relegation to Juryo for November.
Quotable: (source: Chris Sumo Youtube, Sumo Forum)
1. The most intense bout I've had in ages. Makes me think I've still got it.
Tochinoshin (M12w) (ex Ozeki who has struggled with a chronic bad knee for several years) on his victory over Chiyonokuni (M17e). The win evened Tochinoshin's record at 6-6. He is trying to break a 4 Basho Make-koshi (losing record and demotion) streak. Chiyonokuni fell to 8-4 and basically out of championship contention.
2. I just kept my legs moving and applied constant pressure. That's what makes me difficult to live with.
Kagayaki (M13e) on his win over Myogiryu (M10w).The win evened Kagayaki's record at 6-6. He is trying to break a 5 Basho Make-koshi (losing record and demotion) streak. Myogiryu missed out on a chance to tie for the lead with Terunofuji (Y1w).
3. A good forward attack from me, but there are no title thoughts.
Onosho (M6w) on his win over Mitakeumi (S1e). Both Rikishi came into this match with 8-3 records. Onosho moved to within one match of Terunofuji.
4. I just looked to panic him even just a little. Our past meetings meant nothing. I was just in the zone.
Meisei (S1w) on his surprisingly easy upset of Terunofuji. Meisei came into this match at 4-7 and escaped Make-koshi and demotion, for one day at least.
5. Meisei's fine tachiai (initial charge) was key. He pushed his way through, slashed his way inside, and threw with a nice flow.
