DAY 7--September 18, 2021

Video: Note: NHK videos will be available on demand until 2 weeks after the end of the Basho. After that, they will be removed from the site. They are usually available for on demand viewing about 1 day after the matches. Note that "highlights" means complete full match video of all daily Makuuchi matches.

NHK match highlights (condensed, all matches in their entirety, the highlights are 27 minutes long).

All NHK Video Highlights from one link (latest day should be uploaded by about 12:30 am Central Daylight Time the next day (i.e. Day 7 video should by available by 12:30 am Day 8. It might be available before that, so check.

JSA Youtube has offered 2 full matches on its Youtube channel. Hopefully they will do this every day. It is a live feed, no commentary, but it gives another perspective on these matches.

1. Terunofuji (Y1w) v Kotonowaka (M3w) (Terunofuji is on the right)

2. Endo (M11e) v Chiyonokuni (M17e)  (Endo is on the left)

++++

Notable:

Terunofuji (Y1w) won his 7th consecutive match, beating Kotonowaka (M3w) to maintain his 1 match lead over Myogiryu (M10w). The young Maegashira fought hard and extended the Yokozuna past 20 seconds. 8 Rikishi (including 2 san'yaku (Top Rankers--Shodai[O1e] and Mitakeumi [S1e]) are two matches behind. The other 4 san'yaku (Takakeisho [O1w], Meisei [S1w], Takayasu [K1e] and Ichinojo [K1w]) are all trailing by 4 matches and all have more losses than wins at this time.

In spite of their overall under performance, the san'yaku shut out their Maegashira (Rank and Filers) opponenets today, the first time this has happened in this Basho.

Tamawashi (M4e) fought his 1,368th consecutive bout, to move into undisputed posession of 5th place on the all time list. He passed  Dairyugawa. Next on the list is Takamyama at 1,425.

Only 6 different finishing moves were employed today.

Quotable:

I could not find any English quotes today. There are plenty of quotes in the Nikkan Sports match reports and Photo Feature (see below). They are all in Japanese, and I hesitate to use Google Translate for them as they come out quite primitive translations that sometimes make no sense in English.

Nikkansports.com carries the most exhaustive coverage of Sumo that I have seen. It publishes multiple daily articles about the Basho.

All coverage is in Japanese and can be accessed from the Nikkansports Sumo Wrestling News Page. It can be easily (if not well) translated by Google Translate, which can be easily attached to your browser for seamless "translation." It is the next best thing to being able to read Japanese.
