Notable:

Day 8 marked the end of the first half of the Basho (Tournament). For the first time, Terunofuji (Y1w) was in peril of losing a match. Tamawashi (M4e), attacked his throat and almost drove him out, before Terunofuji used a belt grip to force the Maegashira out. An interesting feature of the match was the contrast between the iron man of modern Sumo, who hasn't missed a match in his 17 year career, and a man whose knees are held together with chewing gum and bailing wire, whose injuries and illnesses drove him down to Jonidan (Division 5--no salary), and who fought his way back, all the way to the top. This was Terunofuji's fifth Yorikiri (frontal force out) win, to go along with one Yoritaoshi (frontal crush out). He is now 8-0 (first to a Kachi-koshi--winning record) and leads Myogiryu  (M10w) by 1 match, and five opponents by 2.

The two Ozeki split their matches, with Takakeisho (O1w) reaching parity (4-4) by defeating Daieisho (M4w and January 2021 Basho Yusho [Champion]), while Shodai (O1e) was defeated by Kotonowaka (M3w). It was Kotonowaka's first career victory over a san'yaku (Top Rank) opponent.

Hoshoryu (M1e) returned to action after missing three matches with tonsillitis. He had to fight 2 matches against Ichinojo (K1w) and, in the rematch, forced the big man (206 kg--454 pounds) out.

Maegashira (Rank and Filers) rebounded from their winless day against san'yaku by winning 3 of their 5 matches. They are now 16-24 (.400) against their betters through the first half.

Through the first 8 days, 17 different Kimarite (finishing moves) have been employed. Hakuho (Y1e and out of this Basho due to Covid issues in his stable) employed 7 by himself in the first 8 days of the July 2021 Basho.

Quotable (Source: Chris Sumo Youtube)

1. My finish was a bit weak, but I'm moving well.

Myogiryu (M10w) on his victory over Chiyonoo (M15w). The win moved Myogiryu to 7-1, in second place, one match behind Terunofuji (Y1e).

2. (He is) the westler's wrestler, who's restrained but superb charge and drive attacks are admired by Sumo peers.

Chris Sumo translation of newspaper account accolades for Myogiryu.

3. Hoshoryu's (M1e) absence note has had more re-writes than a Simpson's episode. First it was two days, then seven, and then we presume, three, for he was back today. Fever (from tonsillitis) gone and voice largely regained

Chris Sumo, on the surprising return of Hoshoryu, whose participation in the Basho was in doubt. Hoshoryu, 132 kg (292 pounds), returned to face Ichinojo (K1w), 206 kg (454 pounds). After a Hoshoryu throw dropped both to the clay simultaneously, a mono-ii (Judges Conference) overturned the original Gyogi (referee) decision, calling for a rematch. Hoshoryu won decisively with a Yorikiri (Frontal Force Out).

4. He knocked me back with his charge, but I resisted four-square,and then output all my strength.

Kotonowaka (M3w) on his upset of Shodai (O1e)

5. I just stupidly went too far forward and couldn't keep him in front of me at that rope.

Shodai, commenting on the loss.

Nikkansports.com carries the most exhaustive coverage of Sumo that I have seen. It publishes multiple daily articles about the Basho.

All coverage is in Japanese and can be accessed from the Nikkansports Sumo Wrestling News Page. It can be easily (if not well) translated by Google Translate, which can be easily attached to your browser for seamless "translation." It is the next best thing to being able to read Japanese.
